I can count on one hand the amount of times in my life that I have had to wake up at 4:30am, but for Trevor and Adele, our dedicated Pool Managers, this is a normal routine occurrence.
Whilst the Wongan Hills pool opens on weekdays (except Thursday) at 6am to the public, what many will not realise is that for a Pool Manager, their day begins at least one hour prior to the opening to the public. There are many reasons for this, and I was excited to learn all about preparing to open the pool for the day. Whilst it was Friday 13th, I had full faith that with Trevor’s experience and expertise, everything would go swimmingly!
Our morning was busy, and we carried out a range of tasks by 6am, just to ensure the facility was safe, clean and an enjoyable experience for all patrons coming through the gate on the day. The jobs that Trevor demonstrated included, but were not limited to, pre-start checks of both pump rooms, checks of the chlorine gas, checking water levels, undertaking a water test for both the main pool and small pool, finishing the pool vacuum cleaning cycle, removal of debris in the pool and on deck, cleaning of toilets and change rooms, plus much more!
As 6am came around, we had our early morning swimmers come in, and it reminded me of my younger swim club days before school, it was very picturesque. There are always odd jobs to be done at the pool even once open to the public, and we were kept busy until 10am when we shut the pool for the end of the morning session.
Swimming is an imperative lesson for life, and I would highly encourage everyone to learn to swim and come and enjoy the state-of-the-art pool we are so fortunate to have here in Wongan Hills.
I gained an even greater appreciation for the work and effort that goes into running the pool on a daily basis, and proud to have Trevor and Adele apart of our team at the Shire.
