Remembrance Poppies Revitalised

This Remembrance Day, the iconic metal poppies in Wongan Hills once again stand proudly, freshly painted and glowing in the sunshine as a tribute to those who served and sacrificed for our country.

These beautiful sculptures have a special connection to our community’s history. They were originally crafted in 2005 by Colin Joynes, when he and his family operated the Wongan Hills Garden Centre.

During the COVID lockdowns, when ANZAC services were unable to go ahead, the poppies took on an even deeper meaning. In a quiet act of community pride, they were secretly painted red for ANZAC Day, transforming into a heartfelt tribute that reminded residents that remembrance could continue, even without gatherings or ceremonies.

This year, the poppies have been given a fresh coat of paint once more, ready for Remembrance Day 2025. Their vivid red colour stands as a symbol of sacrifice, courage, and the enduring gratitude of the Wongan Hills community.

A big thank you to all involved in keeping this meaningful display looking its best for our community. These poppies continue to serve as a gentle and powerful reminder of those who gave their lives in service, and of the small acts of care that keep their memory alive each year.

Lest we forget. ❤️
