Official Opening of the Cemetery Toilet

Today we celebrated the official grand opening of the new cemetery toilet, with just under 40 community members coming together for the event. Shire President Cr Mandy Stephenson delivered a speech highlighting the rich history of the cemetery and the strong community effort that brought this project to life.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was joined by representatives from the many groups who supported the project, including Wongan Hills Rotary Club, Wongan Hills Progress Association, Kondut Sports Council, Wongan-Ballidu Development Group, and Wongan Hills Community Association. There were plenty of smiles and even a few chuckles as the ribbon was cut, with some light-hearted debate about who might be the very first to test out the new toilet!

Guests also enjoyed a community sausage sizzle generously provided with the support of the Rotary Club – the perfect way to celebrate a project that truly demonstrates what can be achieved when Council and community work hand in hand.

The project received widespread attention online and even across WA radio, shining a spotlight on our community spirit and the power of working together. A plaque has now been installed at the site to acknowledge the generous contributions that made this facility possible.

Looking ahead, exciting works continue at the cemetery with the introduction of Chronicle, a digital program that will allow families to easily locate loved ones’ plots, view headstone photos, and even create online memorials.

A huge thank you goes to Lorna and Paul, whose suggestion first set the project in motion. Thank you again to everyone involved for showing how much can be achieved when Council and community work hand in hand. A special thanks also goes to our Regulatory Services and Works & Services teams, who went above and beyond to create the wonderful surroundings around the toilet, including a paved path to ensure that the toilet is accessible to all.
