The Shire of Wongan Ballidu wishes to advise residents that a Corella Cull will take place (weather permitting) within the town site of Wongan Hills on:

Saturday 27th and Sunday the 28th of February 2021

The Bulter's Corella (Cacatua pastinator butlerii) is one of two subspecies of western long-billed Corellas that are endemic to Western Australia. At present, the population of Butler's corella is thought to number in excess of 30,000 individuals and is wide spread between an area bounded by Dongara to the northwest, Mukinbudin to the east and Northam to the south. The population is continuing to spread southwards and has been recorded as far south as Narrogin and as far west as the Perth metropolitan area.

Butler's Corella create a nuisance around settlements by defoliating trees and digging up grasses on ovals, race tracks and lawns. Around households, the Corellas chew wiring and other fittings and their loud calls can be an irritation. They sometimes damage grain storage facilities by penetrating tarpaulins or dislodging other fixtures.

Butler's Corella is a declared pest of agriculture under the provisions of the Agriculture and Related Resources Protection Act 1976.

Conservative estimates of the “Wongan-Ballidu” local Corella population number about 6,000. The cull is aimed at reducing this number by either direct removal or encouraging the population to relocate to areas outside the town site.

Shooting is the only method approved under the permit and strict guidelines are imposed to ensure that the culling is done in a very safe and humane way.

Anyone wishing to participate in the cull MUST FIRST contact the Shire's Manager of Works & Services, Mr Karl Mickle on 0439 469 014. The requirements are that the participants must own a licensed 12 gauge shotgun and wear enclosed footwear and a prescribed hi-visibility safety vest. Ammunition will be provided by the Shire.
